COPenhagen Youth Simulation

Democracy at risk in climate governance

Young people are among the most powerful voices in the fight against climate change. Their strong sense of intergenerational justice and future-oriented perspective make them uniquely motivated to push for ambitious climate action. Yet too often, youth remain on the margins of decision-making—consulted but not empowered, acknowledged but not given real influence.

Recent data from UNICEF highlights this gap:

  • 47.7% of young people feel they lack opportunities to share their views on climate policies.
  • 19.3% are unaware of existing avenues to participate at all.

These numbers reveal an urgent need for meaningful, inclusive, and practical opportunities for youth to engage in climate governance.

COPenhagen Youth Simulation

To respond to this challenge, Sustainary has joined forces with People of 2050 and Actory to launch the COPenhagen Youth Simulation—a student-led, immersive educational experience that mirrors the processes of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP).

This initiative will:

  • Equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate international climate negotiations.
  • Create a safe space where youth voices are not only heard but also valued as part of global climate governance.
  • Build bridges between young people and the formal decision-making structures that shape our collective future.

Why It Matters

Major international climate forums, such as the UNFCCC COP, are critical spaces where climate policies are negotiated and advocacy efforts take root. By simulating this process in Denmark—host to key climate commitments—young people gain first-hand experience and develop the tools to step into these arenas as informed, empowered stakeholders.

The COPenhagen Youth Simulation is more than an educational exercise. It is an investment in the next generation of climate leaders.
