Weaving a Blanket of Belonging

Purpose: 
Weaving a Blanket of Belonging aims to explore how Danes and international residents can co-create a stronger sense of belonging and community in Denmark. Through dialogue, shared experiences, and collaborative learning, the project seeks to build bridges between Denmark’s strong tradition of fællesskab (community) and the lived experiences of newcomers.

The initiative focuses on creating spaces where participants can reflect on inclusion, share personal stories, and identify ways to strengthen social connections across cultural backgrounds.

Project Description:
Weaving a Blanket of Belonging was a one-day facilitated event held in 2025, designed to explore how a more inclusive and connected society can be built in Denmark. The event was framed around the metaphor of weaving diverse threads into a collective “blanket of belonging,” highlighting how different experiences and perspectives can contribute to a shared sense of community.

The program combined storytelling, panel discussions, and participatory workshops based on the Design for Belonging approach. Participants were encouraged to actively contribute to the environment of the event, with the day opening around the idea that everyone present also plays the role of host in shaping a welcoming atmosphere.

Expert panels featured personal stories, media perspectives, and psychological insights on what it means to feel part of a community. Interactive workshops then provided practical tools for participants to identify key “moments” and “levers” that can help design belonging in both personal interactions and institutional contexts.

By bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders—including grassroots storytellers, researchers, public institutions, and international residents—the event created space for shared reflection and collective imagination about how belonging can be strengthened in Denmark.
