Danish Elections, European Democracy

As Denmark takes over the Presidency of the EU Council during a time of global uncertainty and rising anti-democratic trends, local engagement becomes more than a civic duty, turning into a vital safeguard for democracy. Yet many young EU citizens studying in Denmark are either unaware of their right to vote in local elections or feel disconnected from the communities they temporarily call home.

Project name: Danish Elections, European Democracy

Purpose: As Denmark takes over the Presidency of the EU Council during a time of global uncertainty and rising anti-democratic trends, this project highlights the importance of local engagement as a safeguard for democracy. Many young EU citizens studying in Denmark are unaware of their right to vote in local elections or feel disconnected from the communities they temporarily call home.

Danish Elections, European Democracy aims to strengthen democratic awareness, participation, and political empowerment among young people. By increasing knowledge about local elections and creating spaces for dialogue, the project supports a more resilient and engaged Europe — whether participants remain in Denmark or return to their home countries.

Project Description: A 2023 report published by Aarhus University highlights a considerable decline in youth participation in local elections across Europe, posing a challenge to the future of representative democracy. If young people disengage, who will advocate for youth perspectives in political decision-making?

Developed in partnership with Greencubator and led by Sustainary, the project consists of two interactive workshops and one public panel debate over the course of two months. The activities are designed to create inclusive spaces for learning, dialogue, and civic empowerment, combining practical knowledge with inspiration for action.
