Debate Lab
Debate Lab is a 4-session programme that helps young people build confidence in speaking, debating, and expressing their ideas. Through practical exercises and real-life scenarios, participants develop the skills to communicate clearly, engage in discussions, and make themselves heard in communities and decision-making spaces.
Project period
01.02.2026 to 15.06.2026
Purpose and description
Many young people have opinions they would like to share in public spaces, but lack the confidence or practical skills to do it. DebateLab is a response to this very challenge, as it aims to support young people in finding their voice and using it. Through workshops, practice, and a final debate event, participants learn how to structure arguments, speak with confidence, and engage constructively with others. The programme focuses on real-life situations, from studies and job interviews to community participation and public dialogue.
Expected results
Many young adults in Denmark face social and communicative anxiety that may inhibit their willingness to speak publicly or contribute their ideas. According to Psykologer i Danmark, social anxiety, including fear of “making a fool of oneself” in front of others, is common among young people, and can result in avoiding social situations or public expression. Among PhD students, a survey by DM and PAND found that 31 % of PhD candidates refrain from engaging in public debate (for example, in the media) because they fear negative reactions. DM Additionally, research from the Statens Institut for Folkesundhed shows that feelings of loneliness are increasing sharply among young adults aged 16–29, which may contribute to reduced self-assurance and fewer opportunities or motivation to speak up. Together, these factors suggest that many young Danes lack the safe, structured environments and practical support to practice public speaking and communication without fear. Debate Lab seeks to address this gap by giving them the tools, experience, and confidence to express their ideas, pitch their projects, and lead conversations.
