DebateLab: Is AI helping us find our voice or rather toning it down?

Many young people have opinions they would like to share in public spaces but lack the confidence or practical skills to do so. DebateLab responds to this challenge by supporting young people in finding their voice and using it. Through workshops, practice, and a final debate event, participants learn how to structure arguments, speak with confidence, and engage constructively with others. This special edition at RUC is designed for students who want to feel more comfortable speaking up and contributing in group environments.

Have you ever doomscrolled through Linkedin or Facebook and felt that all posts were just different versions of the same base text? If you have, know that you are not alone, and flattening of personality due to poor use of AI while creating content is a documented problem. In this workshop we will look into what generative AI can and cannot do, and how it can be used to improve clarity, structure, and confidence in written communication. You will work with real examples such as job applications, LinkedIn posts, and short written pitches, followed by a quick experiment on how AI, when poorly used, kills personality instead highlighting it. 

A key focus is how to maintain your own voice while using AI as a support tool. You will learn how to refine your ideas, make your message more precise, and avoid sounding generic or detached. By participating, you gain practical strategies for using AI responsibly and effectively, as well as concrete techniques to present yourself more clearly in professional situations.
